Make Your Own SunButter

Change up your nut butter game, with this super simple, and deliciously addicting DIY sunbutter. You’ll never buy commercial sunbutter again.

I’ll be the first to admit I spend a lot more than I’m guessing the average 22-year-old does on her groceries. I don’t think it’s something a lot of healthy living bloggers talk about because I think we’d hate for anyone trying to eat healthier and incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies to be discouraged, in fact, it feels a little taboo. (Or hey, maybe that’s just me) If you are curious I went into detail about my grocery shopping two weeks ago to show my meal planning processes.

Last year at school, I remember grocery shopping with my best friend and her roommates (who were your average college guys). I think we both spent close to $80 on our veggies, produce, nuts, nut butter, organic dairy, free range eggs and maybe some wild salmon…ok and probably some kombucha (classic college #ammirite?). All of that fit into 2 shopping bags, while her roommates spent maybe $40 and had twice the amount of food. Let’s just say there were less items of the green variety. Some of the priciest culprits on my list (ok, there’s a lot) include: avocados, almond butter (why the heck is it so much more than peanut butter), kombucha, greek yogurt/skyr, fresh organic fruit and wild caught fish. There’s also the fact that parts of my grocery bill go to create recipes for the blog, which do add up, but still – it’s not hard to spend money on good food.

To me, it’s hilarious that I’ll rarely think twice about my grocery bill or the occasional latte, but I don’t think I’ve purchased new clothes since before I graduated. #LeSigh

All of that was to lead to this point: I do want to make an effort to be more mindful of my grocery spending – and that’s where this recipe comes in. I noticed that a big ‘ol bag of sunflower seeds, aka what I put on practically all my meals (I’m so hooked) is only $2 at trader joe’s, but they were selling SunButter, which I had been meaning to buy, for $5 or $6. I put on my crafty cap and realized I could so easily DIY the crap out of that SunButter – saving me $3-4. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot but those little things add up. Not only are you saving money, (a huge win) but the homemade version is also deliciously addicting.

In fact, I’m willing to bet my next grocery bill on the fact that once you make your own DIY SunButter, you’ll never buy packaged SunButter again. And like any Georgie Morley classic, it’s almost too easy.
